01Climate continues to deteriorate, island countries condemn wealthy countries for failing to fulfill their obligations

United Nations comprehensive news: On May 27th, small island developing countries held a four-day meeting in the capital of Antigua and Barbuda, St. John's, where the summit chairman criticized wealthy countries for failing to fulfill their obligations and limiting the environmental damage caused by carbon emissions, leaving island countries with extremely low carbon emissions facing a continuous climate threat. The Chairman of the Summit, Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Brown, stated at the opening ceremony of the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States that it is not enough for countries to make empty and seriously inadequate commitments based solely on the Paris Agreement.

It is understood that there are39 small island developing countries, most of which are facing multiple challenges such as extreme climate change, escalating debt and health problems. Brown called on countries to provide more climate financing, impose global carbon taxes on oil companies, end fossil fuel subsidies, and accelerate the transition to renewable energy. He also urged wealthy countries to fulfill their commitments by providing $100 billion annually to poorer countries to help reduce carbon emissions and alleviate extreme weather. Data shows that rich countries have donated at least $10.6 billion to poorer countries so far, but require recipient countries to hire specific country enterprises, non-profit organizations, and public institutions, or provide climate loans to poor countries at market rates. This means that funds originally planned for poor countries will eventually flow back into the hands of rich countries.
