01Japan tightens refugee applications, only to be expelled three times

According to Kyodo News, on June 10th, Japan tightened its refugee law, and those who fail to pass the refugee residence permit application three times will be forcibly expelled from the country. The Japanese authorities explained that this is because the issue of refugee detention has become a burden. According to data from the Japanese Ministry of Justice, in 2022, 4233 people submitted applications for residency to the Japanese government but did not pass, of which 3224 were still stranded in Japan, half of whom were refugees seeking asylum.

Previously, due to the time-consuming review process, Japanese authorities allowed applicants to work in Japan with a guardian. It is reported that such a system was eventually abused, leading to a sharp increase in the number of applicants who borrowed the name of refugees to work in Japan. In 2017, the Japanese authorities received approximately 20000 applications. After the new law was introduced, not only were multiple regulations added, but each refugee was only allowed three application opportunities. If the applicant has no special reasons, such as a large-scale conflict in their home country, the Japanese authorities can immediately issue an expulsion order against them. In addition, the new law also makes stricter regulations for expired stranded individuals, such as requiring them to live with their guardians during the application period.

Japan has signed the United Nations Convention on the Status of Refugees, which has the responsibility to protect refugees. However, compared to European and American countries, Japan's refugee recognition rate is extremely low, so there areCriticism of "refugees locking their country". According to data from 2023, out of 8184 refugee applications, only 289 people, or 3.5%, were identified as refugees. Once rejected, there are only 14 applicants who need to reapply for clearance. Many of the refugees seeking asylum in Japan are Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar. In addition, the latest data from the authorities shows that there are currently over 2000 Ukrainian refugees in Japan.
