Recently, the Malaysian government released data showing that the number of civil servants involved in corruption is significantly decreasing year by year, highlighting the positive achievements made by the country in the fight against corruption. At the same time, the government announced that it will raise salaries for civil servants by the end of this year, aiming to improve their welfare benefits and further consolidate the public service system.
According to the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission(According to statistics from MACC, a total of 74 civil servants in the country were convicted of corruption in 2020, but by 2021, this number had dropped to 70. By 2022, the number of corrupt civil servants has significantly decreased to 21, indicating significant progress in the country's anti-corruption efforts.
Malaysia is a country withA country with a population of 34 million, of which about 1.6 million have civil servants, which means that there is one civil servant in every 21 citizens, making it one of the countries with the highest ratio of civil servants to population in the world. However, despite the large number of civil servants, the government has stated that corrupt civil servants only constitute a very small part of it. The Chief Secretary of the government, Mohamad Zuki, emphasized in a recent interview that the number of corrupt civil servants is negligible compared to the entire civil service workforce. The government will continue to strengthen supervision to ensure good and transparent governance of public services.
While strengthening anti-corruption efforts, the Malaysian government is also actively promoting the reform of salary increases for civil servants. Prime Minister Anwar recently announced that civil servants will receive at least a salary increase by the end of this year13%, and it is pointed out that this is only the minimum standard. Generally, the salary increase will reach 15%, while the salary increase for lower ranking civil servants may be as high as 20% to 40%. This measure aims to improve the quality of life of civil servants and motivate them to better fulfill their responsibilities.
During the celebration of the Ministry of the Interior's Eid al Fitr holiday, Anwar stated that the salary increase measures will be more fair, with a slight increase in salaries for senior civil servants and a significant increase in salaries for lower level civil servants. He emphasized that the government's goal is to ensure that all civil servants can live a comfortable life, especially in the current challenging global economic situation.
In addition, Mohamad Zuki also revealed that last year there were8556 civil servants were disciplined, with the majority being absentees, accounting for 21.5% of the total. This indicates that the government has also taken proactive measures to maintain discipline in the civil service workforce.
Despite the large civil service workforce in Malaysia and the fact that related benefits have always been a heavy burden on the government's finances, the government is still committed to improving the welfare benefits and work enthusiasm of civil servants. Through measures such as salary increases and strengthened disciplinary action, the government hopes to further consolidate the public service system and ensure good and transparent governance of public services.
