In a recent study published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, Malaysia was revealed to be a globalOut of 109 countries,The countries that consume the most microplastics, with seafood becoming the main source of microplastic intake. This discovery has sparked deep global concern about food safety and marine pollution.

It is reported that the average daily intake of microplastics per person in Malaysia is as high as502.3 milligrams, of which more than half of the microplastics come from fish. Not only that, Malaysia is also one of the top ten countries that inhales the most microplastic particles, with an estimated daily intake of 494000 microplastic particles per person. This data is shocking and highlights the severe environmental problems Malaysia is facing in its rapid industrialization process.

Microplastics refer to those with a diameter smaller thanPlastic particles with a diameter of 5 millimeters are widely present in marine and freshwater environments, becoming the main carriers of pollution. These tiny plastic particles are not only difficult for the human body to metabolize and absorb, but also accumulate in the body. If they exceed a certain amount, they may cause damage to human health, such as digestive tract damage, cell damage, inflammation, and even damage to the immune system.

The co authors of this study, Zhao Xiang from the University of National Defense Technology of China and You Fengqi from Cornell University, pointed out that marine organisms absorb a large amount of these microplastics, while humans ingest them into the body by consuming these marine organisms. They emphasized that with the increasing degree of plastic pollution, the negative impact of industrial development on the environment is becoming increasingly significant.

Malaysian seafood enthusiasts have undoubtedly become direct victims of this problem. As a country with abundant marine resources, Malaysia's seafood has always been a delicious delicacy on the local dining table. However, with the intensification of marine pollution, the content of microplastics in seafood is also constantly increasing, which poses significant health risks to Malaysian people who love seafood.

Experts suggest that in order to reduce the intake of microplastics, governments of various countries should take measures to reduce the use of plastics and promote advanced water filtration equipment. At the same time, the public should also raise environmental awareness, reduce the use of plastic products, and choose an environmentally friendly lifestyle.

The results of this study once again remind us that marine pollution has had a serious impact on human health. As a global challenge, we must work together to take practical and effective measures to protect our marine environment and safeguard human health and future.
