The Thai economy has recently faced a series of challenges, and in order to address this dilemma, the newly appointedprime ministerThe government led by Paetontarn Shinawatra has announced an ambitious economic stimulus plan that plans to use over 300 billion Thai baht to activate the domestic economy and inject new vitality into Thailand's development.
According to the Thai newspaper "The Nation", this massive economic stimulus fund will come from multiple sources, including the "Additional Budget Expenditure Act", the central emergency expenditure budget, and the upcoming 2025 budget. The Director of the Budget Bureau, Chalermphol Pensoot, stated on August 20th that these funds have been carefully planned and will be quickly implemented to alleviate the current economic downturn.
Specifically, the Additional Budget Expenditure Bill has been approved by the parliament and is about to be promulgated and implemented. The bill will allocate 122 billion Thai baht, mainly to promote the development of digital wallet programs. This plan was originally intended to promote financial inclusion through digital means, but now there are rumors that the government may consider distributing some of the funds directly to the public in cash to stimulate consumption more directly. Ban Su stated that a shift in payment methods is possible, but it will not change the original intention of stimulating the economy.
In addition to the Additional Budget Expenditure Act, the government also plans to allocate 152 billion baht from the 2025 fiscal year budget draft for economic stimulus measures. In addition, the central emergency expenditure budget for fiscal year 2024 will allocate 40 billion to 50 billion Thai baht to address current economic challenges. It is worth noting that this budget must be approved and paid in September before the end of the fiscal year to ensure timely funding.
While promoting the economic stimulus plan, the Petongtan government is also actively forming a new cabinet. Although the cabinet list has not yet been finalized, the government has stated that it will complete discussions on ministerial quotas in the coming days and carefully review the qualifications of each candidate. The smooth progress of this process will provide strong guarantees for the government's subsequent implementation of economic policies.
