Recently, at the investor summit held by the National Bank of Indonesia, former Indonesian President Joko Widodo delivered an important speech. He pointed out that as the focus of global economic growth gradually shifts from the West to Asia, Indonesia is expected to become one of the three economic superpowers in Asia along with India and China.
Joko first emphasized that Indonesia, as the most populous country in Southeast Asia, has enormous market potential and human resources. He mentioned that Indonesia has achieved significant economic growth in the past few years, especially in the first half of this year, with an economic growth rate of 5.08%, which far exceeds the global average growth rate. Joko expressed gratitude for this and believed that maintaining such a growth rate is crucial for Indonesia to achieve its goal of becoming an economic superpower.
However, Joko also admitted that Indonesia still faces many challenges in achieving this goal. He mentioned that the slowdown in global economic growth and the escalating geopolitical tensions have brought uncertainty to Indonesia's economic development. But Joko stated that Indonesia must remain optimistic, bravely face these challenges, and take effective measures to address them.
In order to achieve the goal of becoming an economic superpower, Joko emphasized the importance of downstream policies and digitization in enhancing Indonesia's competitiveness. He cited the localization of Indonesia's mining industry as an example, pointing out that by prohibiting the export of unprocessed nickel ore and encouraging domestic processing into higher value finished products, Indonesia has successfully enhanced the competitiveness of the industry. Joko urged the government to extend this practice to other commodity industries, such as the seaweed industry, to further promote Indonesia's economic development.
In addition, Zoko emphasized the importance of strengthening digital infrastructure. He pointed out that with the advent of the digital age, data centers, digital payment systems, and digital analytics will become key forces driving economic development. Therefore, Indonesia must increase its investment in these areas to enhance its competitiveness in the global market.
Joko's speech has attracted widespread attention and discussion both domestically and internationally in Indonesia. Many experts and scholars have expressed that Joko Widodo's speech has pointed out the direction for Indonesia's economic development and brought confidence and hope to the Indonesian people. They believe that under Joko's leadership, Indonesia has the potential to overcome various challenges, achieve sustained and stable economic growth, and ultimately become an economic superpower in Asia.
Joko has stepped down from the presidency and handed over the baton to President elect Prabowo. However, Zoko stated that he believes a smooth transition between the new and old governments is crucial for the political and economic stability of the country. He wished Prabowo could lead Indonesia towards a more prosperous and strong future.
