Recently,IndonesiaPresident Prabowo announced a stunning plan at the G20 summit: Indonesia will phase out all coal-fired power plants within the next 15 years and advance its goal of achieving net zero emissions from the original 2060 to 2050.
This ambitious plan not only demonstrates the Indonesian government's profound understanding of environmental protection and climate change, but also embodies its responsibility as a responsible major country. President Prabowo stated at the summit that Indonesia has abundant renewable energy resources, including geothermal energy, solar energy, hydro power, and wind power, which will provide strong support for Indonesia to achieve its energy transition and net zero emissions goals.
According to the Indonesian Ministry of Economic Affairs, in order to achieve this goal, Indonesia will vigorously promote the development of renewable energy and plans to increase its renewable energy generation capacity by over 75 gigawatts (GW) in the coming years. At the same time, Indonesia will actively utilize palm oil to produce more biofuels and rely on its vast rainforest resources to produce over 550 million metric tons of carbon credits, in order to further promote the achievement of emission reduction targets.
However, energy transformation is not achieved overnight. Indonesia has a profound historical accumulation and a huge industrial scale in the field of coal-fired power generation. Eliminating coal-fired power plants will involve a large number of issues such as employment, economic restructuring, and energy security. Therefore, the Indonesian government needs to develop a comprehensive transformation plan to ensure social stability and sustainable economic development during the transformation process.
To achieve this goal, the Indonesian government has taken a series of measures. On the one hand, Indonesia is actively seeking support and cooperation from the international community, by participating in global climate governance and energy transition cooperation mechanisms, introducing advanced energy technologies and management experience, and promoting the transformation and upgrading of the domestic energy industry. On the other hand, the Indonesian government is also strengthening the regulation and control of the domestic energy market, promoting the optimization and upgrading of the energy structure, and creating a more favorable market environment for the development of renewable energy.
In addition, the Indonesian government also realizes that energy transition is not only an environmental issue, but also an economic issue. Therefore, Indonesia is actively promoting the development of green economy, cultivating new economic growth points through the development of clean energy, green buildings, green transportation and other fields, and promoting the green transformation and high-quality development of the economy.
