Vietnam, an export-oriented economy, is actively seeking to deepen trade cooperation with the United States and plans to increase imports of US commodities in the future. This development was confirmed by Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, Du Xiongyue, at the recent Vietnam US Business Summit held in Hanoi.
Du Xiongyue stated at the summit that Vietnam advocates promoting trade with the United States in a harmonious and sustainable manner. He pointed out that Vietnam plans to purchase more commodities from the United States, including airplanes, liquefied natural gas, safety equipment, and artificial intelligence chips. This measure aims to further enrich Vietnam's import structure, enhance the competitiveness of domestic industries, and strengthen economic ties with the United States.
However, Vietnam's plan also faces certain challenges and uncertainties. US President elect Trump has repeatedly stated his intention to increase import tariffs, which poses certain risks to the Vietnamese economy. Trump's protectionist stance on trade has raised concerns in the global market, with Vietnam, as an export powerhouse, being particularly affected in its economy.
Nevertheless, Vietnam firmly believes that maintaining close trade relations with the United States is crucial for its economic development. Vietnamese President Leung Qiang previously pointed out at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit that isolationism, protectionism, and trade wars will only lead to recession, conflict, and poverty. He called on all countries to jointly uphold the multilateral trading system and promote stable growth of the global economy.
In this wayAgainst this backdrop, the Vietnamese government is actively seeking response strategies to mitigate the potential negative impact of Trump's trade policies. Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh jung emphasized at the Vietnam US Business Summit that Vietnam needs to maintain close ties with the United States and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries. He suggested that the United States lift its barriers and sanctions against Vietnam, recognize Vietnam's market economy status as soon as possible, and create conditions for cooperation between the two countries and their enterprises.
Premier Fan Mingzheng also proposed that companies from both countries support each other, deeply participate in the construction of the new supply chain, and help expand Vietnam's share in the global supply chain. He pointed out that Vietnam has abundant labor resources and a superior geographical location, serving as a bridge connecting Asia and the world. These advantages give Vietnam enormous potential in attracting foreign investment and expanding exports.
Vietnam's export economy has achieved significant results in recent years. The electronic manufacturing industry has become one of Vietnam's pillar industries, attracting numerous internationally renowned brands to invest and establish factories. However, with the continuous changes in Trump's trade policies, Vietnam's major export industries are also weighing alternative options and seeking diversification of export markets, products, and customers.
