Indonesia officially joins BRICS countries, strategic choice sparks diplomatic attention
Release time:2025-01-30 Source: Qingqiao Number of views:

Recently, Indonesia officially became a member of the BRICS, which has attracted widespread attention in the international community. The BRICS countries, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, are an important economic alliance that has gradually absorbed new members in recent years. The accession of Indonesia this time is seen as an important strategic move by the new Indonesian President Prabowo to enhance the country's global status.

Since taking office in 2023, Prabowo has rapidly promoted the process of Indonesia joining the BRICS countries. This decision is different from the foreign policy of former President Joko Widodo, who tends to maintain a cautious cooperative relationship with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Prabowo stated that joining the BRICS countries will provide Indonesia with opportunities to deepen cooperation with emerging economies and help Indonesia play a more active role in global affairs. He believes that maintaining a flexible foreign policy and not being dependent on a single camp is the key to Indonesia's foothold on the international stage.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the decision to join the BRICS countries and calls it a 'strategic step'. Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that this measure aims to strengthen cooperation with developing countries and jointly promote the establishment of a more equitable global order. They stated that through the BRICS platform, Indonesia will have the opportunity to share its development experience with other member countries, promote trade and investment, and achieve faster economic growth.

However, Indonesia's decision to join the BRICS countries has also raised some diplomatic concerns and challenges. Analysts point out that as Indonesia's cooperation with BRICS countries deepens, it may exacerbate tensions with the United States. Especially considering that President elect Trump is about to take office again, he has threatened to impose high tariffs on BRICS members and criticized BRICS discussions on de dollarization policies. Therefore, how to fully utilize the BRICS platform to promote Indonesia's national interests while maintaining relations with the United States will become an important challenge for the Prabowo government.

In addition, Prabowo's decision is also seen as a manifestation of his personal political ambitions. He hopes to position Indonesia as a leader in the "global South" and work together with other emerging countries to address the Western dominated international system. However, this vision may come at the cost of sacrificing Indonesia's traditional diplomatic principles. Some international relations scholars have pointed out that although the Indonesian government claims that joining the BRICS countries is still in line with its non alignment policy, this decision is more like Prabowo's personal strategic choice and may overlook the potential diplomatic consequences.
