Thai National Airlines - Thai International Airlines(Thai Airways)After years of financial difficulties and debt restructuring, we have finally entered a new stage of development. Recently, Thai Airways announced that it will officially enter an active expansion mode this year, marking that this historic airline is gradually getting rid of the haze of the past and flying high again.
In retrospect, since 2013, Thai Airways has been in the predicament of losing money for consecutive years, especially under the impact of the COVID-19, its financial situation is even worse. In 2020, Thai Airways incurred a loss of 141 billion Thai baht and was on the brink of bankruptcy. Faced with such a severe situation, the Thai government had to take measures and approved Thai Airways' debt restructuring in September 2020.
During the debt restructuring process, retired economist Bia Swastidi was appointed as a key figure in the restructuring of Thai Airways. He worked hand in hand with two debt managers designated by the court, and through a series of effective measures, helped Thai Airways achieve significant improvement in its financial situation in a short period of time. After unremitting efforts, Thai Airways finally achieved a profit of 28 billion baht in 2023 and a net income of 15.2 billion baht in the first nine months of 2024. This achievement not only gives Thai Airways a new lease on life, but also inspires all those who care about the development of Thai Airways.
With the gradual stabilization of its financial situation, Thai Airways has begun to formulate future development strategies. This year, Thai Airways will actively adopt an expansion model, planning to book 45 Boeing aircraft and possibly further purchase 35 or more. This will greatly enhance the capacity of Thai Airways, enabling it to better meet the growing demand for air travel.
In addition to increasing the number of aircraft, Thai Airways will also actively expand its international routes. It is reported that Thai Airways plans to expand its routes to multiple countries and regions such as Europe, China, and Australia. This will further consolidate Thai Airways' position in the international aviation market and bring it more development opportunities.
Thai Airways has adopted a slimming plan during the restructuring process, raising funds through layoffs of over half of its employees, sale of aircraft and properties, and other means. Although this measure caused considerable controversy at the time, it proved to be a crucial step for Thai Airways to successfully restructure and achieve profitability. Nowadays, as Thai Airways enters an expansion mode, its workforce will gradually expand, providing employment opportunities for more job seekers.
