Vietnam has a long and narrow terrain, surrounded by the sea on three sides, and is located in the south of the Tropic of Cancer. It belongs to the Tropical monsoon climate area. The average temperature is 23 ℃ -25 ℃, and the average rainfall is 1500-2000 mm. It is very suitable for tea planting and growth.

Vietnam has a total of 63 provincial-level administrative units, with a land area of approximately 330000 square kilometers. According to surveys, over 50 provincial-level administrative units in Vietnam have planted tea, with a planting area of 123000 hectares and an average yield of nearly 9500 kilograms per hectare. Tea production ranks seventh in the world.

Vietnamese tea is mainly divided into green tea, black tea, Oolong and white tea. Among them, green tea accounts for over 70% of the total tea production in Vietnam, mainly produced in the northern mountainous and central plateau regions. Black tea is mainly produced in the north and south of Northern Vietnam and the central region, and is one of the main varieties of Vietnamese tea exports.

Overall, Vietnam's tea industry has also undergone a transformation from a traditional tea industry structure to a modern industrial structure. Before 2000, the Vietnamese tea industry was mainly based on traditional tea production and sales methods, with most of the production and sales of tea being handled by family handicraft workshops and small tea factories. But after 2000, the government began to attach importance to agricultural production, issued a series of preferential policies to promote tea industry production, actively introduced foreign investment, and Vietnam's tea industry began to develop towards modernization and industrialization, gradually becoming standardized on a large scale, and tea quality and production efficiency were also improved.

Tea plays a very important role in Vietnam's national economy, ranking third in Vietnam's export commodities, and has been exported to 74 countries and regions around the world. In 2022, the total export volume of Vietnamese tea reached approximately 146000 tons, an increase of 15.3% year-on-year; The total export volume reached approximately 237 million US dollars, an increase of 10.7% year-on-year.

Among them, Asia is the largest market for Vietnamese tea exports. Data shows that in the first quarter of 2023, Vietnam's tea exports to Asia reached 29.2 million US dollars, accounting for 83.3% of the total tea exports, a year-on-year increase of 4%. Especially in China, Saudi Arabia, India and other places, the export volume has increased significantly.

But in the first quarter of 2023, Vietnamese tea exports to Europe and the Americas decreased. For example, in the Russian market, the export value of Vietnamese tea was 3.2 million US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 16.9%; The export value of Vietnamese tea in the American market was 1.4 million US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 51.9%, with exports to the United States accounting for 95.5% of the total exports to the Americas. This is mainly because of the Russo-Ukrainian War and inflation, which led to the shrinkage of the local consumer market.

Overall, although Vietnam has a large production and high export volume, its market share in the world's major markets is still relatively low. At present, the EU is the world's largest tea import market, but Vietnamese tea only accounts for 0.2% of the EU market share, and there is still great room for expansion in the direction of developing exports.

Industry authoritative experts have stated that the future development direction of Vietnam's tea industry mainly focuses on improving tea quality and production efficiency. In order to improve tea quality, it is necessary to strengthen the research and cultivation of tea varieties and explore new tea processing technologies. In order to improve production efficiency, it is necessary to strengthen tea garden management and tea production level, and expand the scale of tea production and planting.

In addition, the international market has increasingly strict requirements for tea products. Major tea production areas in Vietnam need to transform tea production towards organic production, maintain the health of tea farmers and consumers, and maintain the sustainable development of green agriculture.
