The most impressive architecture in Laos is undoubtedly the numerous Buddhist temples. There are countless Buddhist temples of all sizes in the capital city of Vientiane, the ancient world cultural heritage capital of Luang Prabang in Laos, as well as major large and medium-sized cities such as Savannah and Bassac.

The architectural art of Laos is full of religious colors, and the shape of the buildings is in the traditional Indian style, forming a dome with a round bottom and a pointed arrow, used for worshipping Buddha. This is because as early as the 8th century AD, Buddhism was introduced to Laos from Sri Lanka and became a national religion in the 14th century AD. Over the course of over a thousand years of development, Buddhist architecture in Laos has gradually formed a strong national characteristic based on the absorption of Buddhist architectural forms from other countries.

The architectural art styles in various regions of Laos vary, and can be divided into three styles: Luang Prabang, Vientiane, and Khouang. The roof of buildings in Luang Prabang has one to three levels of concave walls, hanging low to almost ground, and the Xiangtong Temple is a typical representative; The buildings in Vientiane are the tallest in the country, mostly rectangular in shape. They are greatly influenced by the temple architecture in central Thailand, with high, pointed, and thick roofs. The base of the building is higher than the ground, and the steps at the main entrance are guarded by dragons. The Jade Buddha Temple is a typical representative of it; The temple architecture in Xieng Khouang combines the two architectural styles mentioned above, with a wide and saddle shaped roof that hangs almost to the ground. The temple is built on several levels of triangular lintels.

The size and scale of Buddhist temples in Laos vary, but the space is generally relatively spacious. The distance between buildings is relatively large, often centered around the Buddhist temple, with flexible arrangement of Buddhist temples, drum towers, monasteries, pagodas, Buddhist pavilions, as well as the placement of various Buddha statues and the planting of various tropical plants. Most temples with a long history are planted with Bodhi trees and the Lao national flower Champa trees. Every part of the Buddhist temple is very delicate, with intricate patterns on doors and windows, colonnades, railings, and domes. It is adorned with exquisite Buddhist paintings and carved with gilded figures, flowers, and birds.

According to Lao tradition, whenever a new village arises, it is necessary to build a temple in order to give the village vitality and provide a common place for the villagers to engage in activities. And this place was jointly built by the villagers. As long as there is a temple, this settlement can become a true village. The temple is a symbol of the village and a sacred place in the hearts of the villagers. Due to this reason, Laos has formed a situation where almost every village is a temple, and every village is a temple.

Laos firmly believes in Buddhism from top to bottom, and the people spare no effort to decorate the temples with magnificent colors. Therefore, the temples have become the most beautiful buildings in the local area, appearing particularly solemn and dignified against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds.
