01Dutch researchers are studying how to increase Martian vegetable production

According to Xinhua News Agency, researchers from Wageningen University and its research center in the Netherlands recently published a paper in the journal Public Library of Science · Comprehensive in the United States, introducing their use of simulated Martian soil to plant peas, carrots, and tomatoes in greenhouses, exploring whether intercropping techniques can improve the yield of these crops.

IntercroppingIt is a planting method where two or more crops are planted simultaneously on the same plot of land. During the experiment, researchers added beneficial bacteria and nutrients to the simulated Martian soil, and also regulated the gases, temperature, and humidity inside the greenhouse to meet the expected Martian greenhouse conditions. The experimental results showed that compared with monoculture where only one crop was planted on the same plot, intercropping significantly increased tomato yield, but significantly reduced carrot yield, while pea yield did not differ significantly. Researchers say that this indicates that intercropping can have a significant impact on crop growth in Martian soil, and further research can be conducted on this basis to find better planting methods and increase crop yields by improving soil conditions and other means.
