The excavation of the longest tunnel in Thailand connecting Thailand and Laos has begun. If the construction is completed on time, it is expected to be opened in 2028.

According to reports, this 6.8 kilometer long tunnel is part of the Tengchai to Qingkong railway and will extend to the outskirts of Qinglai Prefecture. The railway line connecting Dengchai, Qinglai, and Qingkong has a total length of 323.10 kilometers. According to the development plan, this railway will connect Thailand's existing railway network to neighboring countries such as Laos and Myanmar to promote tourism and low-cost transportation of Thai goods. A recent report also indicates that this railway line will connect the fourth Laotai Friendship Bridge.

The completed railway will have a total of 26 stations, including 4 large stations, 9 small stations, and 13 small stations. In addition, the railway line will also build four double tunnels through the mountains.

If construction is completed on time, the railway will be ready for operation in 2028, reducing travel time between Thailand and Laos by 1-1.5 hours. He added that railways not only promote tourism and the economy, create income for the residents of the region, but also help to sustainably reduce transportation costs.
