Malacca: Port of Time, Boat of History

Regarding Malacca, writer Yu Dafu once described it as the "South Sea that has been like summer for years with unclear four seasons". In this southern region, even memories seem to become sticky.

Malacca is located on the western side of the Malaysian Peninsula, adjacent to the states of Sembiland and Johor. It covers an area of approximately 1720 square kilometers and is one of the thirteen federal states in Malaysia. Therefore, its official name is "Malacca State".

In junior high school geography textbooks, the overall terrain of Southeast Asia is summarized as "mountains and rivers intertwined, distributed vertically". However, the terrain of Malacca is relatively gentle, coupled with its low latitude, which makes it rich in rice. Like people in southern China, rice is the main staple food.

The winding Malacca River flows quietly, cutting the city in half. Half of them are old cities listed as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, and the other half are Yongwang Shopping Center and Hero Square.

The most famous street in the old city is Jichang Street, which has become a gathering place for Chinese people. In history, Zheng He made seven voyages to the West since 1405, with at least five of them stationed in Malacca, waiting for the monsoon to change. He established a trading point here called "Official Factory", which integrates functions such as supply, commerce, and cultural dissemination. Later, due to its unique geographical advantages, Malacca became an important port in Southeast Asia, where various merchants gathered and goods from multiple countries gathered. Nowadays, there is still a statue of Zheng He standing on Jichang Street, and there are numerous ancient shops on the street, all of which reflect the beautiful scenery of the past.

Not far from Jichang Street is the Zhenghe Cultural Center, which used to be the site of an official factory with three old wells that have not yet dried up. Zheng He's fleet used to fetch water and drink here. The "Flying Swallow Formation" of the fleet displayed in the cultural museum is the most eye-catching, vividly depicting the magnificent scene of over 200 ships and more than 27000 people chopping and chopping the waves back then.

In Malacca, rivers have been shaped as part of the urban landscape. Tourists take off and land at the pocket sized dock, and the boats stir up waves, cheering the people sitting at the coffee shops and taverns on the shore. This leisurely style is not like a product of the Chinese world, but rather more like the legacy of Portuguese and Dutch colonialism in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Along the riverside trail of Malacca, you can still see the fortresses built by the Netherlands to reinforce defense after the occupation of Malacca. And as the dust and smoke of history dissipate, Malacca seems more like a carrier. In the past, it did not have its own destiny, but now it has become a container that blends East and West, ancient and modern, not attached to any culture, but as a result, it has formed its unique local sentiment.
