The Singapore Perspective Forum released by the Singapore Policy Research InstituteAccording to the 2024 survey, over 80% of Singaporean youth are willing to remain single, with 70% believing that it is not necessary to get married or have children, and female youth are even less willing to get married or have children.
This survey was conducted onThe survey was conducted between November and December 2023, targeting 2356 Singaporean citizens and permanent residents aged 21 to 64, divided into three groups: 21 to 34 years old, 35 to 49 years old, and 50 to 64 years old. The survey results will be weighted based on age group, gender, and race to better align with Singapore's population distribution.
According to the survey,Among young people aged 21 to 34, up to 82% accept being single, the highest rate among the three age groups. Most young people are still willing to organize their families, but the latter becomes optional between the comfortable lifestyle they want and expect, as well as the responsibilities associated with marriage and childbirth. The reasons why young people are unwilling to get married include high marriage costs, not meeting the right person, not believing that marriage is necessary for a fulfilling life, having other priorities, and the pressure of getting married in Singapore.
Young women are more likely to believe that marriage and childbirth are not necessary, among which74% believe it is unnecessary to get married, while only 64% of men hold the same view. 75% of women believe it is unnecessary to have children, which is seven percentage points higher than 68% of men. 77% of young men predict that they will get married in the future, while only 60% of women; 73% of men hope to have children, which is 12 percentage points more than women who have this desire.
Karpana, Senior Researcher at the Singapore Policy Research Institute(Dr. Kalpana Vignehsa pointed out that the difference in views between young men and women on forming families is due to women's concerns about not being treated equally in taking care of their families, and therefore they are more inclined to seek meaning in life in other aspects.
Previously, in order to prevent the risk of aging, Singapore set its long-term population target asTo reach two-thirds of Singaporeans who are eligible for working age, supplemented by childcare subsidies and other measures to help parents reduce their financial burden.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has also been talking about encouraging Singaporeans to have babies. He said,"For our future, we must have enough 'Singaporean babies'."
Currently, according to the United Nations classification standards, Singapore has entered an aging society. Expected to arrive in less thanWithin 3 years, Singapore will enter a super elderly society, with 21% of the population aged over 65. By 2030, the number of Singaporeans over the age of 65 will increase to 25% of the total population.
