In recent years, as the world's largest durian consumption market, China's demand has continued to rise, accounting for 91% of the global durian consumption. However, for a long time, China's durian supply has mainly relied on Thailand. Faced with the growing market demand, Chinese companies have begun to turn their attention to neighboring Laos, seeking new sources of durian supply and working together with Laos to create the "durian new aristocracy" in Southeast Asia.
Laos, a country with abundant natural resources and advantageous geographical location, is gradually becoming an emerging place for durian cultivation. Compared to mature durian producing areas such as Thailand, durian cultivation in Laos is still in its early stages, mainly focusing on backyard planting in households. However, with the entry of Chinese enterprises, the development of Laos' durian industry has ushered in unprecedented opportunities.
To ensure the quality and safety of durian, Chinese enterprises actively communicate and cooperate with the Laotian government and relevant departments, proposing the establishment of the "Laotian Durian Commercial Association". The association will be responsible for the selection, grading, pricing, and seed screening of durian, as well as arranging transportation and storage facilities to ensure that the entire process of durian cultivation and export meets the standards and requirements of the Chinese market. At the same time, Chinese companies also plan to send representatives to China to learn advanced planting techniques and bring them back to Laos to improve the technical level and product quality of local durian growers.
Not only that, Chinese companies have also proposed the establishment of the "Lao Durian Professional Association" and the "Lao Durian Research Center". These institutions will strive to enhance the knowledge level of growers on excellent varieties and disease prevention, help growers master the selection of excellent durian varieties and disease prevention techniques, and promote the sustainable development of the durian industry in Laos.
The Laotian government has expressed active support for cooperation with Chinese enterprises. The Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce have all expressed their willingness to work with Chinese companies to promote the development of the durian industry, and hope to take this opportunity to enhance the international competitiveness of Lao agricultural products. At present, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos has been approved to export 17 crops to China and is actively applying for export qualifications for 7 new crops.
With the deepening cooperation between China and Laos in the durian industry, durian cultivation in Laos will gradually achieve scale, standardization, and industrialization. In the future, durian from Laos is expected to become one of the important supply sources for the Chinese market, injecting new vitality into economic cooperation and people to people exchanges between the two countries. At the same time, this will also bring new economic sources to Laotian farmers and promote the diversified development of the local economy.
