As an important participant in the clean energy sector in Southeast Asia, the Sarawak government recently announced an ambitious plan to increase renewable energy capacity to 15 gigawatts (GW) by 2035, further consolidating its dominant position in the regional energy market.
The achievement of this grand goal cannot be separated from Sarawak's abundant natural resources and forward-looking strategic planning. Prime Minister of SarawakAbang Johari In an interview with the media, it was pointed out that although the local demand for renewable energy is relatively low, Sarawak has unique conditions, such as abundant river resources, 20 years of experience in hydropower generation, and constantly innovative energy technologies, which enable surplus energy to be exported to neighboring countries and contribute to regional economic development.
Currently, the energy structure of Sarawak is dominated by hydropower, accounting for as much as 62%, with natural gas and coal accounting for 21% and 16% respectively, while other energy sources such as diesel account for a relatively small proportion. With the increasing global demand for clean energy, the Sarawak government has keenly captured this trend and actively adjusted its energy structure, increasing investment in renewable energy.
To achieve the 15GW target by 2035, the Sarawak government has formulated a series of specific measures. Firstly, we will increase investment in hydroelectric power projects, fully utilize existing river resources, and expand installed capacity. Secondly, actively developing new energy sources such as solar and wind power, encouraging enterprises and individuals to participate in new energy construction through policy guidance and financial support. In addition, Sarawak is also exploring the development and utilization of renewable energy such as biomass and geothermal energy, striving to form a diversified energy structure.
In terms of exports, Sarawak has exported renewable energy to Indonesia and Brunei through the Borneo power grid, and is in discussions with Singapore regarding electricity exports. It is reported that Sarawak plans to cooperate with Singapore's Shengke Industries to build a 700 kilometer submarine cable to deliver up to 1GW of electricity to Singapore. Meanwhile, Sarawak is also considering supplying power to the southern state of Johor in Malaysia to support industrial development and data center construction in the region.
However, the path of energy development in Sarawak has not been smooth sailing. Prime Minister Abanzohari frankly stated that talent shortage and insufficient funding are the main challenges currently faced. To this end, the Sarawak government is actively seeking international cooperation and collaborating with Abu Dhabi renewable energy company Masdar and other institutions to jointly develop cutting-edge projects such as floating solar panels. At the same time, Sarawak will also develop a hydrogen development roadmap, committed to cultivating hydrogen as a reasonably priced alternative energy source, providing new impetus for further optimization of the energy structure.
