Vietnam promotes electric bicycles to tackle air pollution
Release time:2024-12-20 Source: Qingqiao Number of views:

In Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, the problem of air pollution is becoming increasingly severe, and the smog that covers the city for years has attracted widespread attention. According to the authorities' analysis, the main cause of this problem is the large amount of exhaust emissions from gasoline vehicles, which accounts for two-thirds of the entire air pollution problem. To address this challenge, the Vietnamese government has implemented a series of measures aimed at reducing air pollution and improving air quality by promoting electric bicycles.

According to the government's plan, by 2030, a quarter of the electric bicycles sold nationwide will be powered by electricity. The achievement of this goal requires the joint efforts of the entire society, including manufacturers, distributors, and consumers. Although the current market share of electric bicycles in Vietnam is relatively low, accounting for only 9% of the total sales of electric bicycles in 2023, with the continuous progress of technology and the gradual reduction of costs, electric bicycles have begun to be favored by more and more consumers.

The price advantage of electric bicycles is an important reason for their popularity. In Vietnam, the price of an electric bike can be as low as $500, which is relatively affordable for many families and students. In addition, the driving cost of electric bicycles is relatively low, which makes them more cost-effective for daily use.

In Vietnam, the main user group of electric bicycles is students. Due to the relatively price sensitive nature of the student population and their unique needs for transportation modes, electric bicycles have become their first choice. According to statistics, 80% of the local electric scooter riders are students. This phenomenon not only reflects the popularity of electric bicycles among students, but also further proves the enormous potential of electric bicycles in the market.

In addition to the student population, transport vehicles and taxis are also important application areas for electric bicycles. These vehicles travel on the road for a long time, and the contribution of their exhaust emissions to air pollution cannot be ignored. Therefore, converting these vehicles to electric cars will help alleviate air pollution issues. Vingroup, the largest private enterprise in Vietnam, has taken an important step in this field. One of its taxi companies provides passenger services in major cities with thousands of electric bicycles, offering citizens a more environmentally friendly and convenient way of transportation.

In addition, some start-up companies are actively involved in the development of electric bicycles. For example, Selex, a Vietnamese startup that produces electric bicycles, has received support from the Asian Development Bank and has partnered with e-commerce logistics service company Lazada Logistics and international logistics group DHL Express. These companies use electric bicycles for delivery, which not only improves logistics efficiency but also reduces carbon emissions.

However, the popularization of electric bicycles still faces some challenges. In order to promote the popularization of electric bicycles, some entrepreneurs are calling on the government to introduce more incentive measures. For example, waiving the vehicle registration fee for electric bicycles, etc., to allow users to more intuitively see the benefits of purchasing electric bicycles. Although the environmental benefits of electric vehicles are obvious, their promotion still requires financial investment and policy support.
